Upon reading Sandi's and Gattina's choices of Photo Hunt themes for this week, I immediately knew what would make ideal subjects for them. Unfortunately, all my photos of Zanzibar doors were taken at a time when I was still using a film camera and I've yet to convert any of those photos to digital format!
Funnily, the closest thing to a beautifully carved and ornamented Zanzibar door that I could find in my digital photo archive is one at the China House cafe, restaraunt and art gallery located in my home state of Penang! Housed in an old heritage building in George Town, Penang's UNESCO world heritage-listed capital city, it's actually a fairly new commercial establishment but already pretty well known and popular among locals and visitors alike.
As for the other way plainer doors pictured above: the reddish one is from a side shrine at Kamakura's Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine complex. The historic Japanese city's main Shinto shrine, it was founded in 1063 and moved to its present site in 1180. Put another way: it's been in existence for a long time!
In contrast, I sincerely doubt that the weathered pair of doors -- or is it more of a gate? In any case, what caught my attention was the quote inscribed on it that "When God closes one door, He opens another"! -- that I saw while hiking on Cheung Chau one afternoon have been standing there for a long time... and also reckon that they weren't going to be there for much longer after I took the photo! ;b

Hi YTSL, the detail on the doors in your first photo is beautiful. Thanks for the link to the information about Zanzibar doors. It was really interesting. And what a great find in your last photo. I love that quote.
Have a wonderful weekend.
I like that saying... its a good one :) Great pics for both themes :)
Beautiful takes!!
Hi Trekcapri --
Have to say that Zanzibar was the only place where I would fixate on doors... Don't know about you but I found more photos of gates and doorways than doors per se in my photo archive! ;b
Hi Sue --
That saying is very similar to one in "The Sound of Music" by the way... ;)
Hi magiceye --
Thanks!
That is a beautiful collection of door shots.
Have a super weekend.
The green door is especially ornate, I'm so attracted to doors and windows as photo subjects so I was excited to see what other player show today.
Happy New Year.
Wonderful collection of doors. I have boxes of old pictures waiting to be scanned... a job for a rainy afternoon. Happy weekend!
The doors are beautiful ! they are timeless !
I love the first door! Too pretty and it is my favourite colour.
Will you be going back to Penang during CNY?
Hi JDeQ --
I'm glad you like them, and hope you have a good weekend too. :)
Hi PhotoCache --
Weird but true: I think I have more pictures of windows than doors -- and definitely have more pictures of gates!
Hi Gattina --
Glad you like all of them! :)
Hi EastCoastLife --
Am staying in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year -- it's an expensive time of the year to travel!
That green door is gorgeous!! Thanks for the info about Zanzibar, it sounds intriguing!
I love the shots of these beautiful doors and as always an interesting post.

that certainly is a beautiful door in your first image.
I love the thought that when one door closes another opens... We just need to keep our eyes open for the other door!
Hi Anne --
Thanks for visiting, looking *and* reading! :)
Hi Carver --
I'm not sure I'd call the third door beautiful but I do find it interesting. ;)
Hi Aiyah Nonya --
Am guessing you loved the Zanzibar and Penang doors best then... ;)
Hi aspiritofsimplicity --
It was one that I definitely found photo worthy! :)
Hi Sandi --
Exactly. Hope springs eternal and all that! :b
