Yet another Hello Kitty-related blog entry

Something's wrong with this red packet's design... :S

Can you tell -- especially after having
this Hello Kitty themed red packet
to compare and contrast it with? ;b

Wail, wail, gnash, gnash! Earlier today, I made my fifth unsuccessful attempt to get the Dear Daniel figurine that's part of the promotional 7-11 Hello Kitty On Stage figurine set that won't be available for much longer here in Hong Kong. Worse, while my previous attempts to get a Dear Daniel resulted in my getting a Hello Kitty figurine different from the others in my collection, this time around, I now am in possession of one Hello Kitty Office Lady figurine too many. (And should anyone wonder, the other Hello Kitty figurines I have feature the cute cat dressed up as a schoolgirl, maid and cowgirl -- and yes, I really am not sure which is the weirdest of that lot!)

For all those who think I've now really gone insane, please just chalk all this down to a need to let off some Hello Kitty-induced steam! But for those who can empathize -- not just sympathize -- somewhat with my situation, here's going ahead and asking you to check to see whether you're really a fan of Hello Kitty by taking a(nother) look at the photo at the top of this blog entry and telling me what's wrong with the red packet that I found on sale -- in a set along with such as a red packet with a Doraemon design on it and another with Mcdull and Mcmug -- in the period leading up to Chinese New Year 2008.

For the record: Two Hong Kong-based friends of mine as well as myself pretty much immediately spotted the problem. At the same time, one of them reported that when she tried this test out on several of her friends, none of them were able to give the correct answer. So... will you be able to? For my part, I sincerely hope that at least one of my readers will be able to do so. For this way, I'll feel at least a tad reassured that even if I'm adjudged to be somewhat Hello Kitty enamoured (obsessed?), I at least will not be alone among us to be so... ;S

Okay. Here's my guess. Flowers on the wrong side of her head?

Hi Alejna --

You're getting warm. Now for a clue and follow up question: Flowers on the wrong side of her head makes her...? ;b

Flowers on the wrong side of her head makes her...
not Hello Kitty!
Yes? Yes?

That's not Dear Daniel. Wait, is Hello Kitty leading an "alternative lifestyle"?

...backwards?

I see that the catch lights in her eyes are on the opposite side of the eyes than those in the other cat. Almost as if they designed it one way, and then flipped her.

Or is she some sort of evil twin?

The first packet looks like a cheap 'bootleg' with the figures flipped when printed. As alejna said the flowers are on the wrong side of her head. I think the other figure is the same figure with a different hair do. I don't know!!!

Hi Willow --

Yes! So if she's not Hello Kitty, who is she?? ;b

Hi Jason --

Yes, it is Dear Daniel too! Can't you see the Simon Yam-ish tuff of hair on him? ;b

(BTW, nice blog! Lemme know if you want to do a link exchange... )

Hi again Alejna --

You're getting warmer there!!! :DDD

Hi sbk --

No doubt that it's a bootleg but what concerns me more here is that the bootleggers evidently don't know their Hello Kitty family... (*hint, hint* some more!)

Hello Kitty has a sister (twin sister) who wears the flower on the right rather than left side of her head? If so I don't know her name!

YTSL said...

Hi sbk --

Yes, Hello Kitty does have a twin sister and Mimi wears flowers, bows, etc. on the opposite side of her head from Hello Kitty. So what the Hello Kitty red packet pirates have unwittingly done is made it so that Mimi looks to have taken Hello Kitty's boyfriend, Dear Daniel, from her sister! ;(

The nerve of Mimi!!!

Hi once more sbk --

Exactly! And especially shocking since Mimi's supposed to be the more shy twin. I guess it's true what people say about still waters running deep... ;S

Hi there, I'm finally getting back to you! I would love to trade links with you and already linked your blog on mine. This was just a travel blog for my family from last summer, but I still get random hits all the time. BTW, any advice for a film-crazy gweilo trying to move to Hong Kong? (I'm a fulltime graphic designer and freelance film writer.)

Hi Jason --

Have gone ahead and put your blog on my blogroll too.

As for advice for you: You look to have managed to make quite a few contacts on your visit to Hong Kong.

If you've got their e-mails, why not ask them for jobs and/or whether they know someone who would be willing to hire someone like you? Also, don't let your not knowing Cantonese or Mandarin make you think there are no jobs for you here.

Alternatively, some words of caution: It seems like there are plenty of local graphic designers, so it's a competitive field that may not pay that well (due to it being an employers' market). At the same time, if you're willing to accept local pay, it really may be worth a try to look for a job here.

Yvonne,

Thanks so much for the link and the advice. Thought of you when I posted this Hello Kitty-related entry of my own on another blog of mine:

Cheers and talk soon,
Jason

Hi once more Jason --

You're welcome and hmmm, seems like it's hard even for someone like you to ignore her kittiness... ;b
