Three Tung Ping Chau photos to share

Earlier today, three friends and I visited a Hong Kong island
that's much closer to mainland China -- and yes, that's
the mainland visible in the distance in this shot
-- than Hong Kong's main landmass

Part of the Hong Kong Geopark, Tung Ping Chau
and fascinating geological sights galore

But rocks were by no means the only interesting sights to be
had on this fascinating place -- as this photo of only the second
lantern bug (AKA lantern fly) I've seen to date shows :)

I am so tired from today's excursion that words almost fail me.  Still, I wanted to share some of the considerable amount of photos I took while exploring Tung Ping Chau earlier today before I head off to the land of nod, so I hope you enjoy the shots displayed above. :)

Tung Ping Chau seems like a forbidding or at least most uncomfortable place but it is wonderful to see the plants with the big green leaves and small white flowers growing in such an inhospitable environment for flora.

Is that a signpost giving the distances to places in Hong Kong or on the Mainland? If so it is an odd place from which to start.

Wow, that is really a remarkable-looking bug! What a great photo you managed of it.

I love the rocky photos, too!

Hi Langming --

Toh cheh/sieh sieh! :)

Hi magiceye --

Thank you! :)

Hi ewaffle --

Actually, Tung Ping Chau has a lot of foliage on it -- and a surprising variety and amount of fauna. (Among other things, I've never seen so many caterpillars in other parts of Hong Kong...)

Re the signpost: if I'm not mistaken, the markers point to areas where one is allowed to fish and where one isn't. ;b

Hi alejna --

I have to credit one of my friends for spotting the bug -- and the bug for staying so still that it actually was pretty easy to photograph.

Am glad you like the rocky photos -- and by the way, I took A LOT of photos of rocks on Tung Ping Chau! ;b

I always wanted to go to Tung Ping Chau, but never made it. Thanks for sharing.

HK has the coolest bugs!

Hi baroness radon --

It does take quite the bit of effort to go to Tung Ping Chau. I think it's worth it. Re other places I want to go to: I really hope I can get to the Ninepins Group some time...

And yeah, Hong Kong has amazing bugs! :b

When I went to TPC it was infested with ants! Hope you were more lucky.

Hi Emilie --

I had read (I think on the Hong Kong Outdoors website) about ants and was put off visiting Tung Ping Chau for a time because of that. When I visited, didn't notice THAT many ans though... in fact, I saw a lot more caterpillars on my visit! ;b

Hi DASKMA --

You're welcome. Don't know if you noticed but this was not my first lantern bug sighting or photograph -- but am glad I managed to get a shot of it from the angle that I did with this photo. :)
