Nautical (This week's Photo Hunt theme)

I was born on an island (Penang) and currently reside on another island (Hong Kong). In between, have also spent several months on a third island (Zanzibar's main island of Unguja). These facts notwithstanding though, I've not been a person who's had much to do with things nautical for pleasure as well as work.

Thus, I've taken a cue from a few Photo Hunters whose bridge(s) efforts last week covered significant swathes of the area surrounding the ostensible focus of the Photo Hunt and opted for the above photos: ones that show off quite a bit of Hong Kong's (the territory as a whole, not just the Hong Kong Island) varied geography along with the different types and sizes of vessels that sail in its waters.

(And for those seeking details: the first photo was taken in Sai Kung and looks toward Ma On Shan; the second looks to Aberdeen Channel from near one of the entrances Ocean Park; while the third, of course, is from Tsim Sha Tsui looking across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island.)

I like the shot of Tsim Sha Tsui looking across Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

Hi Napaboaniya --

Thanks but ugh... am trying to ignore it being Valentine's Day, actually! ;(

Great shots for the theme and an interesting post too.

Happy Valentine's Day!

oops I just saw you were trying to avoid it being Valentine's Day so I'll amend my last comment to Happy Weekend.

The 3rd photo looks so familiar. I think I've seen it in the HK TV series. :)

Hong Kong is a beautiful island to be on a holiday. I wished I had more time to explore the whole island earlier. Thanks for sharing. :)

Happy Valentine's Day!

Those are some striking photos. The hills are just beautiful, and it is cool to see that range of types of vessels (many of which look quite different from any I see in this part of the world).

I like the shot with the buildings, too, but I can't help but think that the air quality wasn't too great that day!

Wonderful HK photos :)

HVD :)

I'm living on a tiny island too.
I was fascinated by the many yachts at Mongkok.

Nice shots. I always like seeing photos of HK harbor. I hope someday I could see that in person.

BTW, the first two photos of my entry are from an Alaskan cruise and the third one was a Baja Mexico cruise.

Very nice shots. Hong Kong harbour is very impressive. Great take on nautical.

(I'm ignoring V-Day too, ha ha, so have a good weekend!).

Those are fabulous photos!
These reminds me that I also have lots of pictures of ships outside Hong Kong Island.
Happy Valentine´s Day!

Great shots, all of them, but I do like the last with the contrast of the boat against the ultra-modern architecture.

No shortage of Nautical subjects around your area.

Hi again Napaboaniya --

It's a shot that is easy to take (as it's from a very accessible place) but yeah, I like it all the same. :)

Hi Corey --

Hope you'll come over and visit some time. In the meantime, hope you enjoy seeing Hong Kong through my photos. :)

Hi Carver --

Thanks -- and re V Day: yeah, it's not my favorite day of the year but still am determined for it to not spoil my weekend! ;b

Hi Blur Mommy --

Yes, that view of Hong Kong's skyline has been much photographed and filmed... ;)

Hi Criz Lai --

It's not just Hong Kong Island that's beautiful but also the other parts (including some 260 other islands) that make up the territory of Hong Kong... :b

Hi Alejna --

The air wasn't great that day (unlike the day I took the Aberdeen channel photo) but at least I could see across the harbour. On really bad air days, one actually can't! :S

Hi Julie --

Thanks and hmmm VD makes me think of... venereal disease! :DDD

Hi Eastcoastlife --

I don't think Singapore's that tiny actually. Especially since it can be home to a few million people! ;b

And yachts in Mongkok -- wow, really???!!! :O

Hi Photo Cache --

Sounds like you've been on your share of cruises. Maybe one day you'll go on a cruise that will have Hong Kong as one of its stops? :)

Hi Annie --

Yeah, am treating V-day like it's another Saturday. Actually, it's been more social than usual -- just came back from a super lengthy dim sum lunch with a friend and her family! :b

Hi Randi --

Thanks and would love to see your Hong Kong photos some time... :)

Hi Jams --

Thanks, and happy weekend to you too. :)

Hi Bengbeng --

Thanks for the wishes. And oh, okay, I'll accept Valentine's Day wishes since quite a few Photo Hunters seem intent on sending them! ;b

Hi Babylonezoo --

Merci beaucoup! ;b

Hi A. --

*Snap* I like that third picture for that same reason. :)

Hi Aileni --

Yup. It's funny -- I really do live minutes away from Victoria Harbour and yet... Also, like today, I've already crossed it twice -- it's just that I've gone under it both times (on underground trains)!

Great photos. Our cruise leaves from Hong Kong in June - am so looking forward to it - have only been to Singapore in the Asian region and am looking forward to visiting Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Tawain and Beijing - very excited to be visiting a beautiful region. Enjoy your week.

Hi Incog & Nito --

Sounds like a great cruise you'll be going on in June. Hope you'll enjoy your visit to Hong Kong and the rest of your ports of call. :)

Hi Pacey --

Thanks! :)

Hi Brita --

Hope that if/when you visit Hong Kong, it'll be when the weather is good and the air pollution not terrible!

Hi JC --

Glad you like the photos! :)

Hi Isaiah --

Yes, Hong Kong really is indeed a fast-paced and exciting place in which to live. You tempted to try it for yourself some time? ;b

not much a water person myself but I like looking out at the sea and wonder about where people go in those fancy boats, I've never actually been in Hong Kong but I think all places has some beauty wherever there's water

Have a nice saturday! :)

Mine is up too!

There's something about that first photo I just love, though they are all most excellent for the theme. Happy Valentine's Day.

ewaffle said...

Lovely photos, as always.

I formerly lived on a small island in the North Atlantic--Manhattan. Its nautical roots can be seen at museums and tourist attractions (South Street Seaport) but not much more. The lower Hudson emptied into New York Harbor right behind our apartment building but the only ships were cruise ships and the only boats were pleasure craft/yachts.

That is a nice one. Hope you have a nice Valentines....TC

Nice contribution to this week's PhotoHunt theme. Hope you are having a great weekend.

Mojo said...

Wow. I don't think you were reaching at all with these. Certainly not like some folks did last week!

And you've actually been to Beaufort, NC? (Isn't it great? I love it there!)

Great photos of Hong Kong.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hi! I just wanted to tell you about my hunt photo...yes, those are wild seals...they come up onto the floating docks to sun themselves in Oregon on the Pacific ocean coastline. Pretty cool huh? thanks for visiting my hunt

Hi "My Way" --

Thanks, and yes, I (we) do. :)

Hi Candi --

Thanks and happy weekend to you too!

Hi Dianne --

The thing is that because I live surrounded by high-rises, I sometimes forget as well as definitely can't see that the sea (or, at least, Victoria Harbour) is just a few blocks away. And I really have gone underneath it far more than sailed on and across it since moving to Hong Kong!

Hi Philos --

Globetrotter? It's all relative. Compared to many people, definitely, yes, but often, when looking at maps, I'm struck by how much of the world I've yet to go to... including one whole continent (South America).

Hi PowerTwinsB --

You're welcome re the explanations. Thanks for reading. And thanks for returning to answer a query I had on your blog! :)

Hi Pat --

Thanks! :)

Hi Lissa --

I know what you mean about bodies of water often adding to the beauty of the overall landscape.

Hi Vita Stunder --

Thanks and alas, Saturday's over and half of Sunday, so only have half a day's worth of a weekend left! ;(

Hi Tokenhippygirl --

What I like about that photo is having the interesting shaped Ma On Shan mountain in the background. Also, that speedboat gives a sense of movement to the whole scene. :)

Hi ewaffle --

Funny to think of Manhattan as an island - when I think of a New York City island, think more of Staten Island!

Hi Gen/Entry --

Well, I had an okay enough V-Day... by largely ignoring that it was Valentine's Day! ;b

Hi Tarheel Rambler --

This weekend's going fast - I think that's a sign that I've enjoyed it for the most part! ;b

Hi Mojo --

Yes, indeedy, re Beaufort! Some years back when I was living in Philadelphia, went on a wonderful road trip "down South" with a friend that went all the way to Beaufort (where we spent a few days with her friends who also became my friends) before going back up north again.

Hi Bonggamom, and Patricia too --

Thanks!

I had no idea what Hong Kong looked like. Thanks for sharing this.

Great pix!

Thanks for the visit :)

YTSL said...

Hi Dragonstar --

Just a quick elaboration: Hong Kong is the name of the island that I currently live on but also a greater territory as well -- and of the three photos in this entry, only one was taken from Hong Kong Island and two show parts of Hong Kong Island.

And hmmm, you mean you're another person who's not a V-Day fan (and this despite your being married)??

Hi Marites --

Hope you'll have a good visit -- and that the weather improves in time for your visit!

Hi Sue --

Thanks for the compliments and you're welcome re the visit. :)

Hi Jientjie --

Do feel free to check out other entries in this blog to get more ideas what Hong Kong looks like! :b

Hi Teena in Toronto --

Thanks and, again, you're welcome! :)

Hi Sammawow --

Thanks and it was a bit of a mixed weekend but some parts of it were indeed good, thanks. :)

Hi Carey --

Thanks and you're welcome!
